Security Deposit Policy

Last updated: July 2026

The deposit is a refundable hold — not an extra fee. Here's exactly how it's taken, what it protects against, and when it comes back.

01How the deposit works

A refundable security deposit is required for every rental. It is authorized as a hold on your credit card at pickup — it is not a charge and, in most cases, funds are never actually captured. The hold simply reserves the amount against the card in case of damage or additional charges.

The deposit is separate from your rental total and is never included in the amount you pay online.

02Deposit amount

The deposit amount varies by vehicleand reflects the value of the car you're renting. The exact amount for your vehicle is shown on its detail page and again on your rental agreement before pickup, so there are no surprises.

03Release & timing

Your deposit hold is released after the vehicle is returned in its original condition and we complete the post-rental inspection. Once released, the timing of funds becoming available again depends on your bank or card issuer — typically a few business days.

If a hold was placed but not captured, releasing it simply removes the authorization; if any amount was charged, refunds are issued to the original card.

04What can be deducted

The deposit protects against costs beyond normal use. Amounts may be applied from the deposit for:

  • Damage to the vehicle, wheels, or interior beyond normal wear
  • Excessive cleaning or damage from smoking
  • Missing fuel (returned below the pickup level)
  • Mileage over the included allowance — see Mileage & Fuel
  • Tolls, traffic citations, parking tickets, and related administrative fees
  • Insurance deductibles where applicable

If charges exceed the deposit, the renter remains responsible for the difference, as set out in our Terms of Service.

05Card requirements

The deposit must be placed on a major credit card in the primary renter's name. The card must have sufficient available credit for the hold at the time of pickup. See our Rental Requirements for the full checklist.
